As the Iraqi army and special forces teams enter the embattled city of Mosul, they are finding the mass graves of civilians who opposed ISIS/ISIL forces in the northern Iraq city. According to the United Nations, advancing forces have found stockpiles of sulphur and ammonia, which can be used to make crude, but effective improvised explosive devices (IEDs).
The battle for Mosul will be a long drawn-out affair, with ISIS/ISIL commanders ordering their soldiers to fight to the death. Urban warfare will be costly and messy.
