According to CNN’s chief international correspondent Christine Amanpour, U.S. allies are “completely dumbfounded” by President-elect Donald Trump’s ongoing public feud with the CIA, which says it has proof that Russian Federation President Vladimir Putin “authorized a cyber-war campaign to help Trump win the presidency.”
Mr. Trump claims that past failures to accurately report on conditions in Iraq before and during “Operation Desert Storm” in the early 1990s makes current intelligence estimates untrustworthy.
In an exclusive interview, correspondent Amanpour sums up what she feels worries U.S. allies the most:
“It veers between panic and incredulity,” Amanpour said when asked about the international community’s reaction to Trump denigrating America’s intelligence agencies. “I think much of the allies, certainly, the U.S. allies abroad are completely dumbfounded as to why the president-elect has not satisfactorily answered the question of why he believes Russia.”
“When CNN’s Alisyn Camerota pointed out that Trump claims that he’s not listening to the intelligence community because they got things wrong in assessing Iraq’s WMDs program, Amanpour said that this was a night-and-day issue — and that if the CIA, FBI and NSA all assert that they have a high level of confidence that Russia wanted to help Trump get elected, their opinions should carry significant weight.”
Mr. Trump is making a strategic and geopolitical blunder by not listening fully to the analysis of our intelligence community. By ignoring advice from proven sources, Mr. Trump will not be able to anticipate the actions of our international competitors–something that could catch us in a “Pearl Harbor” or “9-11” scenario. If one is to err, let it be on the side of caution. Mistakes can be costly. Mr. Trump is fooling himself and the nation if he thinks he can outwit the likes of Mr. Putin, who is an experienced former KGB officer acquainted with disinformation and disruption campaigns. Quite simply, we are being played by experts who have extensive experience in destabilizing governments. Ignorance of reality is no excuse.
