Be careful what you wish for–your dream or nightmare may come true. This cautionary tale from “The Huffington Post” falls into the “bad dream” category.

What began in 2009 as an interview request between Naval War College professor David Kaiser and Citizens United supporter Steve Bannon has morphed into a serious foreign policy crisis for the United States and its declining number of allies.

Move forward to 2017 and we find Mr. Bannon serving as White House Chief of Staff advocating the controversial “Four Turns” philosophy of American History.  Bannon believes the United States goes through four stages of history before it ultimately triumphs or is destroyed by overwhelming force from the outside. Now that Bannon has President Trump’s confidence, the former spokesman for the ultra-right Breitbart News Service is in a unique position to influence our nation’s political, military, and economic policy. The workings of this policy can be seen in our draconian immigration and economic policies, which are designed to eradicate terrorists and undesirable elements from our society.

Bannon has made no secret that the United States and the “Judeo-Christian west is collapsing…it’s imploding…and it’s imploding on our watch…and the blowback of this is going to be tremendous…”  Bannon claims that the U.S. is now in its fourth stage of development–the final phase between a new society and the remnants of the old world order. For Bannon, “war is already here…we must fight back…”  And who are the prime enemies? Bannon says we face a 100-year war with radical Islam and several decades of struggle with the Peoples Republic of China and the reinvigorated Russian Federation.

According to “The Huffington Post”,  Bannon says we are close to the Apocalypse:

“In Bannon’s view, we are in the midst of an existential war, and everything is a part of that conflict. Treaties must be torn up, enemies named, culture changed. Global conflagration, should it occur, would only prove the theory correct. For Bannon, the Fourth Turning has arrived. The Grey Champion, a messianic strongman figure, may have already emerged. The apocalypse is now.”

“What we are witnessing,” Bannon told The Washington Post last month, “is the birth of a new political order.”

If President Trump follows the advice of his closest advisor and confidant, we as a nation are in deep trouble.  Bannon’s apocalyptic view of history will lead us to a world-wide conflict that he, himself, may be creating.  At the worst, Bannon’s view may be a self-fulfilling prophesy which will cost thousands of lives. At the best, Bannon’s opinions will lead the United States into isolationism and protectionism, with more ambitious powers such as Russia and China filling the diplomatic, military, and economic vacuum created by our departure from the world scene. Bannon’s views are based on a highly questionable interpretation of American History.  Bannon’s recommendations could leave this country isolated, alone, and friendless as other nations scramble to make agreements with the military superiority of Russia and China.  Hopefully, we can survive the next four years intact.  Restoring 70 years of statecraft, trust, and mutual aid will take a long time.
