This video is part of the BBC Newsnight television program that features analysis, debate, exclusive interviews, and “robust” discussions of current geopolitical affairs.
In this video, correspondent Graeme Wood discusses the rise of the so-called Islamic State, something Europe and the United States have ignored for too long. Wood believes the rise of ISIS/ISIL is a kind of “reformation” within Islam. Wood compares the violence of this reformation with the social upheaval brought on by Martin Luther in 16th century Europe.
Wood’s interpretation of Islamic history is subject to debate, primarily from Islamic scholar Tariq Ramadan, who says the “reformation” theory of Islam is “misguided”. Ramadan feels “we should not try to understand Islam through a Christian lens.”
This video has already sparked a lively debate in the UK. Check out some of the viewer comments to see just how Wood’s Islamic “reformation” theory is playing in Europe.
