Some of the strange and disturbing technologies pioneered in the popular “Matrix” sci-fi films are coming true today.  According to DARPA officials, the Neural Engineering System (NESD) program “could allow for the creation of ‘super soldiers’ and allow doctors to help blind people see again and paralyzed people walk.”

According to reporter Sean Adl-Tabatabai, this ground-breaking research will amount to a quantum leap in neurological understanding:

“The goal is to achieve this communications link in a biocompatible device no larger than one cubic centimeter in size, roughly the volume of two nickels stacked back to back,’ DARPA has said previously.”

“The program, Neural Engineering System Design (NESD), stands to dramatically enhance research capabilities in neurotechnology and provide a foundation for new therapies.”

‘Today’s best brain-computer interface systems are like two supercomputers trying to talk to each other using an old 300-baud modem,’ said Phillip Alvelda, the NESD program manager.”

‘Imagine what will become possible when we upgrade our tools to really open the channel between the human brain and modern electronics.’

“Among the program’s potential applications are devices that could compensate for deficits in sight or hearing by feeding digital auditory or visual information into the brain at a resolution and experiential quality far higher than is possible with current technology.”

Opinion:  As wonderful as all this technology sounds, there is a darker thread running through this once-classified project.  As DARPA readily admits, the cutting edge technology could produce “super soldiers” in addition to relieving the pain and hopelessness of thousands of disabled people.  Once this technology falls into the hands of powerful political brokers and criminals, the emphasis of NESD could change into maintaining cyborg-like soldiers and preserving the health of those who could afford such treatments. Given the propensity of our species to exact cruelty and torture against our fellow beings, I doubt if all the positive benefits of this technology will be available to most of us.  The high goals of NESD will fade before the gods of power, money, and influence.
